refrigerator water dispenser cleaning?
Hello everyone. refrigerator water dispenser in my desperate need of cleaning ... water tastes horrible, even when you change the filter and now I noticed that the black specs are formed in the water dispenser! Since these specifications are formed when the water is still, I suspect they are the mushrooms and bits of charcoal. I drink tap water now so do not use the dispenser, but still be good know what to do about it ... it looks ugly!
I still think it might be coal. But you said that the water tastes terrible. You did not say what model or brand so I can not help you much. But I know that Whirlpool will work without the filter in place. GE come with a bypass to do this. Some do not work that way. I say remove the first filter and flush if possible. One problem is that the carbon removes the chlorine in the water. Then material can grow if not used. You can let the chlorinated water in it by a shot without the filter in place. For older who use a real tank, I have seen the accumulation of sediment in the tank. The tanks are located behind of the drawers. Some can be removed. Some may not (without cutting it loose and the addition of connectors), but sometimes you can remove the screws and place upside down and then pull chain by running out of it. You may look under the lines themselves and see if you see any mold on the lines. The unit is the most likely place, and it's hot down there. It is possible that substitution lines. The only time I've seen here is when a client by double filter using a carbon filter for the whole kitchen and a second in the fridge. Definitely no chlorine for them. Good luck. Edit-PS. We have seen some of those water lines flexible, reinforced plastics, react with water and the smell very bad if your pH is high in the household water.
