How strong can get wine?
My partner's grandfather left bulb charges homemade wine that he drank on special occasions recent. It is 10 years old, the smell of liquor, but went down smooth as wine. Was it as strong as it smelled, tasted or in between somewhere?
Wine rarely gets beyond 14% alcohol, although 18% is possible. After that level, the alcohol kills the yeast and fermentation does not occur anymore, so no more alcohol is produced. How much sugar is in fruit or mixture from which wine is made determines the final alcohol content, so the grandfather could come have been on the strong side if the fruit was very ripe or extra sugar added. Or maybe it is enriched with extra alcohol! But for some reason they do not know, manufacturing homemade wines can go directly to the head in a way that store-bought wine does not.
